Reaching the unreached through Christian workers supported by Barnabas
Project(s): 00-477, 00-478
An Ethiopian evangelist prays with two men
Barnabas Fund is helping to reach the unreached with the Gospel by supporting hundreds of pastors and evangelists in 22 countries where Christians are under pressure.
One missionary couple who are assisted financially by Barnabas Fund are possibly the only Christian workers in the remote, impoverished area of the Central Asian country where they witness. Almost everyone is Muslim, and the Gospel may never even have been preached there before.
As a result of the couple's ministry, nine people from their own village, four families in a hamlet 30 miles away, and another 11 people 40 miles away, have become Christians. Among them are a local mullah's family.
The couple - themselves converts from Islam - face resistance from local Muslims and the authorities; the village committee has twice tried to evict them. Consequently, they have to visit converts secretly at night to disciple them in their new faith. Christians in this Central Asian country are not allowed to share their faith with Muslims or teach it privately.
Thousands accept Christ
Barnabas Fund gives financial assistance to 238 evangelists and church planters and 154 pastors; they are working in their own countries or among their own people groups.
Among them are 60 Ethiopian missionaries from a Muslim background who are working in pairs in rural parts of their country. A total of 3,480 people out of the 11,335 who heard the Gospel over a ten-month period to May 2011 have acknowledged Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. As well as evangelising, these Ethiopian workers spend much of their time pastoring new believers.
In Chad, Barnabas Fund supports 38 missionary couples, including "Jacob", his wife and four children. They moved to a remote village in the south of the country four years ago to reach the unreached from a folk Islamic people group.
Jacob also travels to nearby villages where the many from a related people group have responded positively to the Gospel and come to faith in Christ, forming a small church.
