Despite being the indigenous people of the land, the Christian population of Iraq is, today, small in number and extremely vulnerable. Iraqi Christians have been targeted in waves of savage anti-Christian violence as Muslim extremists try to “cleanse” their country of any trace of Christianity. In February 2010, one month before the national elections, ten Christians were murdered in Mosul in a two-week period, prompting thousands to flee the city. In May, a roadside bomb and a car bomb were detonated in Mosul, killing a Christian shopkeeper and injuring at least 80 Christian students who were travelling from a mainly Christian town to Mosul University. However, in July 2010, the Iraqi government pledged to help exiled Christians return to their homeland with jobs, money and land to build houses and offered the possibility of creating a semi- autonomous region for Christians, similar to Kurdistan, should the Christians wish it.

Over the past ten years Barnabas has funded many projects in Iraq. We fund two mobile medical clinics, which bring doctors and medicines to some of the neediest Christian families in northern Iraq, and we have funded the construction of several apartment blocks for Christian refugees in that relatively safe area. Barnabas also helps Iraqi Christians who have fl ed to neighbouring countries such as Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, by providing food parcels and other basic necessities.
Barnabas Fund projects include
- Iraq General Fund - 20-227
- Mobile clinics (Ref. 00-671 Medical Fund)
- Feeding Iraqi Christian families in Iraq (Ref. 20-246)
- Feeding Iraqi Christians in neighbouring countries (Ref. 20-383)
- Accommodation for Iraqi Christian refugees (Ref. 20-710)
