In April 2010 Christian church leaders in Kyrgyzstan gathered for prayer and action after a violent uprising in Bishkek, the capital, left 80 people dead and 1,500 injured. But two months later Christians were caught in the middle of deadly clashes in Osh and Jalalabad, in which ethnic Kyrgyz targeted ethnic Uzbeks. Hundreds of thou- sands of people fled their homes, taking shelter in makeshift refugee camps. In the midst of the crisis Kyrgyz Christians began to be targeted for their faith, as well as for trying to help across the ethnic divide. Parliamentary elections were held in October, but they did not produce a clear winner. At the time of writing, the Kyrgyz Central Election Commission had agreed to recount the votes after complaints from one party.

A Christmas service in a home in rural Kyrgyzstan, a country that saw substantial ethnic violence in 2010

Despite a tumultuous year, Christians in Kyrgyzstan will undoubtedly find time to observe the birth of our Lord and Saviour. The occasion is celebrated by an evangelistic church service, which can include a drama, followed by a church meal. The meal usually consists of soup, bread and fried egg. If they can afford meat, this could be served in the soup, or as laghman (thick noodles with meat and vegetables) or plov, a dish of fried rice and carrots. A salad of carrot, tomato and onion may also be prepared. Presents are not normally exchanged at Christmas, as people are too poor.
