Ravi Murmu, an evangelist in India, was murdered in May 2010 a few hours after showing the Jesus film

Every year Barnabas Fund learns of Christians – individuals, small groups and larger numbers – who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their faith in Christ. In May 2010 a Christian evangelist from Bihar State in India, Ravi Murmu, was brutally murdered after showing the Jesus film. That same month, police raided a house in the Pyongan province of North Korea, where an underground church was meeting, and its three leaders were quickly tried and executed. In January and March appalling attacks by Muslims in Plateau State, Nigeria, left scores, perhaps hundreds, of Christians dead.
In some Christian calendars the day after Christmas is used to commemorate the first Christian martyr. In the book of Acts (7:54 – 8:1) Stephen is stoned to death in Jerusalem after bearing a bold witness to Jesus; he prays that his murderers’ sin will not be held against them and commits his spirit to the Lord. He follows the example of his Master in accepting suffering and martyrdom at the hands of others.
The story of Stephen, and those of Christian martyrs today, stand as an inspiration to all Christians in our experience of persecution and suffering for Christ. They speak most powerfully to those whom He may also call to be killed in His service.
