Christians fear a repeat of the
carnage in Orissa in 2008 |
The Prashanti Human Rights Centre has warned that Karnataka could see an anti-Christian onslaught similar to that unleashed in Orissa State from August 2008; many Christians were killed and severely wounded and tens of thousands left homeless as radical Hindus rampaged through villages, destroying homes and churches.
There was an outbreak of anti-Christian violence in Karnataka at around the same time with a series of attacks on Christians and church buildings. Citing police sources, Ronnie Prabhu, general secretary of the Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights, said that some Hindu groups were planning to mark the anniversary of the 2008 attacks with a repeat performance.
Police interference
Fears were raised when police started calling local church leaders on 18 August, asking them to register their premises at the nearest police station. They were also required to obtain permission from the district commissioner before holding gatherings and provide the number of regular worshippers. The president of Karnataka Mission Network, to which 27 churches in the state belong, said that 70 pastors were contacted in this way and were told that without registration, police would not be able to protect their buildings. Mr Prabhu said that police were showing concern for the churches but also appeared to be “laying down impossible conditions so that they can’t be held responsible” in the event of violence.
So far this year, there have been more attacks against Christians in Karnataka than in any other Indian state; almost a third of the total recorded incidents were committed there.
Last Sunday (21 August), a church minister was badly beaten up by a group of 20 radical Hindus while he was leading a service in the home of a parishioner in Rohi village, Karnataka. The Rev. Sangappa Hosamani Shadrak (28) lost a tooth and suffered facial injuries in the attack, after which he was taken to another village and tied to a tree. The victim was then detained by police on unspecified charges.
The previous Sunday, a group of around 25 Christians who had gathered for prayer in Basavanagudi village, Karnataka, were attacked with clubs and sticks by around 30 villagers led by two Hindu extremists; some of the believers were seriously injured. The extremists were angered by the conversion of these Christians, and spread rumours in the village that they were actively involved in forcibly converting Hindus.
