Praying for the Persecuted Church in Lent - Maldives
Country: Maldives
The Maldives is often considered an idyllic paradise, but for non- Muslim residents of these strongly Muslim islands it is far from idyllic. The new constitution of 2008 has made things worse for them, and if a proposed bill is passed into law it will be even more difficult.

There are around 80,000 migrant workers in the Maldives, including Buddhists, Christians and Hindus. There are also a small number of Maldivian Christians, who suffered a severe crackdown in 1998, with some being imprisoned and tortured. They continue to be carefully watched, as well as discriminated against and ostracised.
The 2008 constitution introduced many democratic changes but contained no guarantee of freedom of conscience or religion. In fact, it specifically stated that “a non-Muslim may not become a citizen of the Maldives”. It is not yet clear how this will be interpreted, but the most alarming scenario is that non-Muslims are stripped of their existing Maldivian citizenship, leaving them without any of the protection of the law, vulnerable to imprisonment without trial or to any other kind of abuse.
In 2009, the Maldives parliament considered a bill to make it illegal to build places of worship for non-Muslims or to practise non- Muslim faiths in public, although foreigners would be allowed to worship in the privacy of their homes. Punishment would be a jail term of up to five years or a substantial fine. There was almost unanimous support for this or something more restrictive, and the bill was sent to committee.
