After the oppressions of the Communist era came to an end in 1991, Russia saw a massive increase in Christian activity. But conditions for the non-Russian Orthodox churches have become more difficult again. A 1997 law on the registration of religious organisations, and subsequent legislation, have imposed serious restrictions on the worship and work of minority groups.
Some local authorities harass and discriminate against Protestant Christians, not least by impeding their access to land and permits for church buildings. Some arbitrary detentions for religious activities, and acts of violence against people and property, have also been reported. In areas where Muslims form the majority, churches composed of converts sometimes suffer persecution.
Barnabas supports a church and training centre that promotes Christian mission and ministry in an unstable region of Russia, where Muslims are the majority. The team from the centre plants churches by establishing small groups that develop their own outreach programmes. It also initiates a variety of projects among children and young people and provides humanitarian assistance to needy families. New and established leaders are trained through specialist courses and seminars, and regional conferences equip Christians to witness to their faith more effectively among their neighbours. Bibles and other Christian literature are distributed.

- Pray for our brothers and sisters in Russia, that the freedoms granted to them since the fall of Communism will be maintained.
- Pray for unity and harmony among the churches in this huge and very diverse country. Ask the Lord especially to strengthen those Christians who face discrimination or persecution, whether from their local communities or from government.
- Pray for Christians who are working to proclaim the Gospel, that both their words and their deeds may commend Christ to those who do not know Him.
- Pray that the Lord will send workers into fields that are white for harvest.
