Saving Iraqi Christians

Project(s): 20-227

Country: IRAQ

Saving Iraqi Christians

The 2,000-year-old Church in Iraq faces extinction at the hands of Islamic extremists. Many of the militants have made clear that they seek to cleanse their country of Christians and Christianity. They tell the Christians, "Convert to Islam, leave or die." The militants are well on the way to succeeding in their aim, at least in the south and central areas, as Christians flee the restrictions, threats and violence imposed on them.

According to some estimates, more than a million Christians have left the country since 1990 when anti-Christian feelings began to rise during the first Gulf War. This figure represents about two-thirds of the Christian population. Many of the refugees are in neighbouring Syria and Jordan where they struggle to find accommodation, food and other basic needs. Of the Christians who remain in Iraq, many have moved to the relatively safe Kurdish areas in the north, but have no means to support themselves there.

You can help

Pray for Iraqi Christians.

Find out more about their plight.

Write to your elected representative (e.g. member of parliament, congressman or senator). Ask what your government is doing to offer asylum to Iraqi Christians in danger of their lives. Say that you want your country to be a safe refuge for them.

What Church leaders say about Barnabas Fund`s aid for Iraqi Christians

"Iraqi Christians are facing danger and destruction on every hand. But Barnabas Fund has been our faithful brother for many years, bringing help when we felt forgotten, bringing hope when we felt ready to despair. I thank God for Barnabas Fund which is a lifeline for the Church in Iraq."
Archbishop Athanasius Toma Dawod, of Iraq
Patriarchal Vicar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in the UK
(representing Iraqi Orthodox in the UK)

"Thousands of Iraqi minority Christians, specifically targeted because of their Christian faith, have been pushed out of their ancestral homeland. They have escaped to Syria and surrounding countries because of written threats, kidnappings, bombings and murder by Muslim extremists. Barnabas Fund boldly stepped in with its compassionate heart and extended its right arm of help and support since March 2003 till this day. Thousands of families remain supported on a monthly basis. One of the families said: `It is easy for a friend who knows you to support you, but I am really blessed and encouraged by such an organisation [Barnabas Fund] which is supporting me and thousands like me through you without even knowing us.` The Union of the Baptist Churches of Syria wholeheartedly commend the work of Barnabas Fund and its ongoing work to assist Iraqi Christians."
Prof. Jany Haddad, MD, FRCS (Glasgow), FICS
Baptist Church leader, Syria

"Our Nazarene church in Damascus has been participating since 2003 in four stages of ministries for the Iraqis who fled to Syria and took it as their new haven - relief aid, schooling, spiritual needs and medical support. We extend our heartfelt thanks from the depth of our inner souls for all support delivered to us through Barnabas Fund which has been to us as an answer to prayer. We highly commend the work of Barnabas Fund."
Senior Leader from the Nazarene Evangelical Church in Damascus

"Barnabas Fund has demonstrated great care for the poor and needy, especially for the Iraqi people who now struggle as refugees in Syria and surrounding countries. The work that the Barnabas Fund has begun here has paved the way for much needed support from other NGOs. Barnabas has shown itself to be peerless in the degree of its support towards the Iraqi people in Syria. The Barnabas Fund is now a name that the Iraqi people in Syria are uttering in their prayers of thanksgiving."
Archbishop Eustathius Matta Roham,
Syrian Orthodox Archdiocese of Jazirah and Euphrates

  • Three churches in the Iranian capital, Tehran, have recently been ordered to stop holding Friday services in Farsi, the Iranian national language. One church was told that if the order was ignored, the building would be bombed “as happens in Iraq every day”. It is easier for people to attend a church service on a Friday, the main weekend day, than on Sunday, which is a working day. The Iranian authorities are concerned at the number of Muslims turning to Christ, and these restrictions seem designed to make it harder for Muslims to hear the Gospel. Pray that the government’s plan will not succeed, and that the churches in Iran will continue to grow. Subscribe to the prayer points rss feed 7 hours ago

  • Egyptians go to the polls tomorrow (23 May) for the first round of voting in landmark presidential elections. The contest will see Islamist candidates go head-to-head with former members of the Mubarak government and poses a huge dilemma for Christian voters. Despite suffering discrimination and persecution under the old regime, Christians are mostly supporting one of its candidates, fearing that an Islamist president would turn the country into an Islamic state. The Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate, Mohamed Mursi, has vowed to implement sharia if elected, and a recent opinion poll found strong support for this agenda. Pray that the new president will run Egypt in such a way that Christians “may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:2b), and that their rights will be upheld. • The Cuban authorities have also been clamping down hard on Christian human rights activists. On 4 March, Caridad Caballero Batista and her husband Esteban Sade Suarez were detained on their way to church, mistreated and held in a poorly ventilated, mosquito-infested cell for three hours. Since the start of the year they have been blocked, and sometimes violently prevented, from attending Christian activities. Other Christian activists have also been arrested or prevented from attending worship services. Give thanks that the churches in Cuba are growing, and pray that they may be strong in the Lord (Ephesians 6:10). Subscribe to the prayer points rss feed Mon, May 2012 00:00

  • Threats, beatings, arrests and fines: these are all penalties suffered by Cuban pastors in a recent crackdown by the authorities. One church leader, from Moa, sustained brain damage in a brutal assault on 6 February; it is thought he was targeted because he challenged the confiscation of a vehicle owned by the church. In another incident, on 25 February, four leaders were detained in Bayamo while sharing the Gospel at the local bus station. One of them was so badly beaten that he required hospital treatment. In Havana a pastor has been repeatedly fined huge sums because his church is not registered, while another has faced threats of violence because of his congregation’s outreach to people on the margins of society. Pray for these leaders as they recover from their ordeal, and for an end to the official harassment. Subscribe to the prayer points rss feed Sun, May 2012 00:00

  • Unregistered churches in Kazakhstan can face intense harassment from the authorities. On 8 February Aleksei Asetov, a father of ten, was given a fine equivalent to about 18 months earnings of an average wage for leading a small unregistered church that meets in his home in Ekibastuz in Pavlodar Region. His property was raided and Christian literature seized, and he was convicted of carrying out banned religious activity. He is the fourth Christian known to have been fined since the new Religion Law came into force. Pray that Christians will stand firm in their faith and show the love of Christ to those who persecute them. Subscribe to the prayer points rss feed Sat, May 2012 00:00
