Sudan is a nation divided. The North is dominated by Muslims, while the Southerners are predominantly Christian. Attempts by the government in the North to Islamise the South generated a longrunning civil war that ended only in 2005. Sudanese Christians suffered
grievously in the confl ict, although the churches also experienced immense growth.
Despite the signing of a peace agreement, Christians in the South continue to endure insecurity and poverty, aggravated by brutal attacks from the Lord’s Resistance Army and by inter-ethnic violence. Those in the North still face suspicion, discrimination and severe restrictions. Converts from Islam in the North are liable to various judicial punishments, including the death penalty, though this is seldom imposed. They also face intense pressure from family and community.
Christians in North Sudan, whether converts from Islam or refugees from the South, need help to support themselves in the face of their society’s hostility. Barnabas contributes to the costs of a training programme to teach tailoring to women. Some of them use the money they earn to pay their children’s school fees, while others fi nd that their pastor husbands can give more time to their ministry. Widows are saved from destitution. Many of the women also have their faith strengthened by the Bible studies that are held before each class.

- Pray for Christians living in the Soba Aradi camp for displaced people about ten miles from Khartoum, whose homes and church were demolished by rainstorms and flooding in August 2009. Displaced by the civil war and already coping with scarcity and unemployment, they must now face an extended period of homelessness. Ask the Lord to provide for their needs and give them patience in adversity.
- Pray too that the Muslim government and people of the North will not hinder the rebuilding of their homes and lives.
- Pray that the forthcoming elections and referendum on independence for the South will produce a just and lasting peace in Sudan, so that Southern Christians still in the North can return home in safety.
