The motion, “Secularism is a greater threat to Christianity than Islam”, will be debated at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Wednesday 29 June, 6-8.30pm. It is part of a series of debates being organised by the Spectator.
Dr Sookhdeo, alongside Observer columnist Nick Cohen, and Douglas Murray, an author, journalist and Associate Director of the Henry Jackson Society, will speak against the motion.
Damian Thompson, the Telegraph’s leader writer and blogs’ editor, Tariq Ramadan, Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University, and Father Timothy Radcliffe OP, a Dominican friar from Blackfriars, Oxford, will speak for it.
Dr Sookhdeo said:
Christianity is under attack in Britain today and its foes are many. This is a very pressing matter not just for the Church but also for the very fabric of our society. So I greatly welcome this opportunity to debate the heart of the problem on such a prestigious platform and I trust that this event will awaken the country to the urgency of the situation.
Political broadcaster and journalist Andrew Neil will chair the debate. Opening speeches will be followed by a question and answer session and a summing up by each speaker. The audience will then vote.
Tickets for the debate cost £30 (£20 for Spectator subscribers); they are available from www.spectator.co.uk/events; debate8@spectator.co.uk or by calling 0207 961 0044 (quote Debate 02).
Barnabas Aid’s Operation Nehemiah campaign was launched last year to raise awareness about the multi-faceted threat to Christianity in Britain and to work towards the spiritual transformation of our society. For more information click here.
