Eritrea is one of the worst persecutors of Christians in the world. Despite its constitution’s guarantee of religious freedom, war and instability have made its government acutely fearful of disunity and dissent. The authorities believe that people who give their highest allegiance to God may at some point refuse to obey the commands of the state.
It is estimated that Christians comprise some 45% of Eritrea’s population, and that about 50% are Muslims. However, only four religious groups are officially recognised: the Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Lutheran Churches, and Sunni Islam. Other groups have to be approved by the authorities before they can engage in any activities, and registration has so far proved to be impossible. Buildings belonging to non-registered churches have been closed. Even the registered churches are subject to extensive control.
Members of unregistered churches are regularly harassed and arrested. It is estimated that 2,800 Christians, including many church leaders, are currently detained within Eritrea’s infamous prison system, without charge or access to legal representation. Some prisoners are asked to sign pledges to renounce or not practise their faith as a precondition of their release.

In September 2009 the Eritrean government called on its citizens to inform the police of any illegal gatherings of Christians in their neighbourhoods. The statement declared that meetings of unregistered groups in homes are criminal acts and deserving of legal punishment.
- Pray for boldness and strength for believers in Eritrea in the face of this fresh act of repression, and ask that their neighbours will not deliver them up to the authorities.
- Pray too for Christians already incarcerated in harsh conditions, that they may be patient and faithful in their ordeal and that the Lord will change the hearts of their persecutors.
- Pray that the religious freedom promised in Eritrea’s constitution will finally be granted.
