Tight security for pastor’s funeral amid threats to Dagestan Church
Country: Russia
| .Security was tight for the funeral of a pastor who was killed by a gunman amid growing fears of a targeted campaign against the Christian community in Dagestan |
The local authority provided protection for Artur Suleimanov's funeral, which took place two days after his murder on 15 July. Three vehicles with armoured personnel guarded the funeral procession, and traffic lights were switched off for people to follow. The event passed without incident.
Around 300 people from across Dagestan and the Former Soviet Union, including senior church leaders, packed Hosanna House of Prayer in Makhachkala for Pastor Suleimanov's funeral. The chief of the local police spoke at the service. The pastor had been shot while leaving that same building, which was his own church.
Further details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting have since come to light. Another Christian was sitting in the car with Pastor Suleimanov when he was killed, strongly indicating that the latter was singled out for assassination. He had been very active in outreach to Muslims, and his life had been threatened on several previous occasions. No arrests have yet been made in connection with the murder.
Around a week before Pastor Suleimanov's death there had been a small explosion at a church in the Dagestan town of Kaspiysk. A caretaker was the only person present and was not injured. Two more bombs were then discovered near the building by the police.
A Barnabas Aid representative for the Former Soviet Union said,
"There are fears that the murder of Pastor Suleimanov in Makhachkala and the bombs in Kaspiysk are not random incidents but rather part of a targeted campaign against the Christian community in Dagestan.
"Explosions and killings happen practically every day in this republic but there does appear to be a particular threat to Christians in the present climate."
