The constitution of Vietnam guarantees freedom of religion and belief to its citizens, but this commitment exists only on paper. The Communist government has made illegal any activity that is held to undermine the country’s peace, independence and unity, and it exercises strict control over every aspect of church life that might pose a threat to its power. Many Christians in Vietnam have faced arbitrary arrest and detention, and some have endured malnourishment, beatings and torture while in custody.
The government offi cially recognises the Roman Catholic Church and two Protestant denominations, and these have limited freedom to meet, worship and train leaders. Other groups, such as Protestant house churches, are banned, and their members suffer intense pressure from the authorities: they may lose their jobs, see their children barred from enrolling in school, or have their property seized. Some have been forced to sign documents renouncing their faith.
Many Christians belong to ethnic minority groups such as the Degar, who are particularly liable to rigorous persecution. Numerous Degar congregations have been disbanded, and in 2009 the fi rst ever church building constructed for the Degar was demolished by the government. Twelve Christians were arrested when they held a prayer vigil to mourn its loss.

- Pray for the government of Vietnam, that it will relax its control over the country’s Christian community and follow through on the constitution’s promise of religious freedom.
- Pray for Christians who have been imprisoned for their faith, that the Lord will encourage and empower them to stand firm.
- Pray especially for those who belong to unrecognised churches and ethnic minority groups, that the pressure and persecution they suffer will be relieved.
- Pray that the sufferings of the Church in Vietnam will promote its growth in numbers and in Christ, and that it will witness effectively to Him.
