Algeria has seen a sharp rise in official and unofficial discrimination against Christians over the last few months. Since the beginning of this year, some 20 churches have been closed; many of them have been operating officially for many years. There have also been numerous arrests of Christians, often on questionable charges.

Algerian Christians often meet together in basement rooms like this to worship

Algerian Christians have asked their brothers and sisters around the world to support them in prayer and to speak up for them by writing to their Algerian ambassador or to the Algerian government.

Will you help Christians in Algeria by writing a letter about their plight? It will be most effective if you write in your own words, but Barnabas Fund has a sample letter to use if you prefer. If you write your own letter, it does not need to be long, but please make it clear and polite.

The sample letter together with names and addresses to write to, background information, a list of incidents and churches closed can be found at this link.

Please Pray:

1. Pray for Algerian Christians who face increasing harassment from government officials and local authorities. Pray that the Lord will give them courage, wisdom and grace when confronted with discrimination or unjust charges. Pray that their actions and their lives will be a witness to God`s great love.

2. Pray for the government and for local authorities in Algeria. Pray that they will stop harassing Christians and instead start seeing them as a positive influence on society. Pray that the State will stop putting bureaucratic obstacles in the way of churches trying to register as an official place of worship.
