The forgotten Christians of Baghdad - please continue to help

Iraq

We praise God and thank our supporters for the wonderful response to last week's appeal. We have received enough donations to provide one monthly food parcel for each of the 360 Christian families we were asked to assist. However the need is continuing and we are seeking support for them for another two months, until the very hot weather in Baghdad has eased off.

Christians in Baghdad are a beleaguered minority. Many of the original Christian inhabitants fled the terrible violence a few years ago, and those who live there now were displaced from other parts of Iraq. Baghdad church leaders appealed last week to Barnabas for food aid.

Iraq's Prime Minister has now declared victory over Islamic State (IS) in Mosul. But as Iraqi government money and international media focus on providing relief to the devastated city, Christians in Baghdad live with daily insecurity and desperate practical needs.

Those who had fled to Baghdad from Mosul and the surrounding Nineveh Plains are reluctant to return to the liberated territory; they fear booby traps, land mines and a future resurgence of IS, not to mention the fact that IS had seized many Christian homes and sold them to Muslims to raise funds for itself. But life in Baghdad is also precarious, with bomb attacks every few days.

Church leaders in Baghdad are struggling to help with the practical needs of their congregations, especially the sick and disabled. It is always hard for internally displaced people to find work, and the uprooted, traumatised believers depend on their churches for support – practical, spiritual and emotional.

Help this week

Baghdad church leaders appealed last week to Barnabas Aid to provide emergency food parcels for 360 of the neediest displaced Christian families there. Even a single food parcel will take the pressure off for a short period, freeing up church resources to help with medical needs. Just £31 (€35; $40) will buy a food parcel for one of these 360 families, to last about a month.

International agencies are active in Iraqi Kurdistan, where most of the Christians from Mosul and the Nineveh Plains have gone. But there is little or no help for those who went to Baghdad.
