Nancy and Mary married two brothers but both the husbands are now dead. The widowed sisters-in-law live together in southern Lebanon with Nancy’s two daughters and Mary’s two sons. Both women have found jobs, but what they earn is not sufficient. They still struggle to provide for their children’s schooling and basic needs. The church helps them out whenever it can.

People are saying the situation in Lebanon is now even worse than in Syria. Yet Dima, a young Syrian Christian widow, came to Lebanon with her children only last year, when Lebanon was mired in dreadful calamities. Like Nancy and Mary, she depends on the church for practical support.

In Lebanon there are long queues to buy bread, and cooking oil is virtually unobtainable. Fuel is so costly that some dare not eat food items which require lengthy cooking. People have died because they could no longer afford the medication they depended on.

“When I help them, they see the face of Jesus,” said our project partner, the senior leader of the church running the aid programme which helps Nancy, Mary, Dima and hundreds of other Lebanese and Syrian Christians to survive. The church gives food, hygiene items, medicine or money according to the needs of the families and the resources of the church. When possible, it also helps pay for X-rays, other medical tests and surgical operations. In winter it provides fuel for heating.

“God is sending money to us,” said our project partner, but the needs are always growing, and Lebanon’s spiralling inflation means costs continue to rise.
