At this time of year Christians throughout the world celebrate the resurrection from the dead of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Those who follow the Western church calendar marked Easter Sunday last week, while those following the Eastern church calendar will do the same this coming Sunday.

The Lord’s victory over death provides a powerful, firm, strengthening hope for Christians who live with the harsh reality of persecution and oppression.

Across the world believers continue to face death, danger and discrimination. Each week we sadly find ourselves reporting more bad news than good.

Yet Christ’s resurrection demonstrates the overwhelmingly Good News that He has overcome the world (John 16:33), just as He has overcome the sin in our own hearts.

This Good News is especially dear to those who have lost family and friends to anti-Christian violence, or risk their own lives by identifying with Christ. Despite the troubles of this world, eternal life has been secured for every believer through the finished, saving work of Jesus.

His people are strengthened and nourished by reflecting on what the Lord has accomplished on their behalf.

“Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said.”
